Steps for Replacing Struts on a Kia Forte with Minimal Downtime

Replacing the struts on a Kia Forte can seem challenging, but with proper preparation and the right tools, you can complete the job efficiently and minimize vehicle downtime. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth replacement process.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Jack and jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Spring compressors
  • Replacement struts
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Safety gloves and goggles

Preparation

Park the Kia Forte on a flat surface and engage the parking brake. Use wheel chocks on the wheels that will remain on the ground. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where you’ll replace the strut, but do not remove them yet.

Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands. Remove the wheel to access the suspension components.

Removing the Old Struts

Apply penetrating oil to the bolts and nuts securing the strut assembly. Locate the strut assembly in the wheel well. Remove the bolts connecting the strut to the steering knuckle.

Support the strut with a spring compressor if necessary, then remove the top mounting bolts inside the engine bay. Carefully take out the old strut assembly.

Installing the New Struts

Compress the new strut’s spring if it is not pre-assembled. Position the new strut in place and attach the top mounting bolts first, tightening them to the manufacturer’s specified torque.

Reconnect the strut to the steering knuckle and tighten all bolts securely. Double-check all connections and ensure everything is properly aligned.

Finishing Up

Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and then fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to the specified torque.

Take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure proper handling. Revisit the torque settings if necessary after a short drive. Regularly inspect the new struts for signs of wear or issues.
