How to Install a New Power Steering Pump on a Dodge Ram Truck

Replacing the power steering pump on a Dodge Ram truck is a manageable task that can save you money and extend the life of your vehicle. Proper tools and safety precautions are essential for a successful installation.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Screwdrivers
  • Power steering fluid
  • Wrench set
  • Drain pan
  • Replacement power steering pump
  • Serpentine belt tool or breaker bar

Preparation

Before starting, ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface, the engine is cool, and the parking brake is engaged. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any electrical issues. Drain the power steering fluid into a drain pan by removing the return hose from the pump.

Removing the Old Pump

Loosen the serpentine belt using a belt tensioner tool or breaker bar. Carefully remove the belt from the power steering pump pulley. Next, disconnect the hydraulic lines from the pump, being prepared for any residual fluid to leak out. Remove the mounting bolts holding the pump in place and carefully take out the old pump.

Installing the New Pump

Position the new power steering pump in place and secure it with the mounting bolts. Reconnect the hydraulic lines, ensuring they are tight to prevent leaks. Reinstall the serpentine belt around the pulley, adjusting the tension as needed.

Refilling and Testing

Refill the power steering reservoir with the recommended type of fluid. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed air from the system. Check for leaks around the pump and hydraulic lines. Add more fluid if necessary.

Final Checks

Ensure all tools are removed from the engine bay. Double-check the fluid level and look for any signs of leaks. Test drive the truck to confirm smooth steering operation. Properly dispose of any used fluid and old parts following local regulations.
